We'll see shortly what Salmond has planned for his referendum but if it is anything like the White Paper he produced in 2010 this is my view.

So I'm expecting a sell-out and a strategic mistake from Salmond.

I just don't think he is smart enough to present a referendum question and ballot paper around which Scottish republicans can unite with Scottish royalists for Scottish independence.

I think Salmond will be tricked by the UK civil servants into a position that is offensive to the sovereignty of the Scottish people and our rights to elect a president.

It won't be like the 1997 referendum when we all united around "I agree that there should be a Scottish parliament".

The 1997 referendum was not really asking the Scots to agree the limitations of devolution, only asking if we agreed that we should have a parliament which was easily agreed by all parties.

In 1997, those for Scottish independence and those for a Scottish republic could all agree the need for a Scottish parliament alongside those who accepted the limits of devolution.

I think Scottish republicans should do a lot of kicking a fuss up about Salmond's sell out because even if we don't get the question improved in his "consultation", it'll give us grounds to take advantage of any other opportunity to advance the cause which arises before 2014.

We'll be able to say - take independence if we can now before 2014, by this other means, because the SNP 2014 referendum plan will try to bind us to the Queen and so is not worth waiting for.

If republicans support Salmond's plan without reservation republicans will be marginalized as SNP & Queen's lackeys.

As for a 3rd question for devo-max, this proposal ought to be ridiculed and I do so in this satire video.

What's the point in going cap in hand to UK Westminster for more devolved powers for Salmond when the UK has made it clear nothing more is on offer? There is no point at all.

Devo-max begging will be a humiliating experience and so let Henry McLeish wear his knees out crawling to Cameron if he wants - that's not our republican style.
